I love this sweet little church! Antioch Baptist dates back to the mid/late 1800s; having a congregation founded by freed slaves from southern Taiaferro and northern Hancock Counties. In 1899 four acres of land was acquired from a local landowner for the church and cemetery, and the structure was erected by a local craftsman. Twin Gothic revival style towers rise above the old tin roof.
Although decendants of the original congregation are said to reunite once a year, the church does not hold regular services.
Antioch sits mostly abandoned in a peaceful clearing by the highway; maintained and preserved to some degree by locals, and relies primarily on donations by explorers and those who cant resist the pull of this interesting roadside relic. The doors tend to be unlocked, and an audio historical marker stands out front. Inside is a guest book and a bowl for donations.
Antioch has avoided the destruction of vandals and taggers, but upon entering, keep in mind that water damage and unstable flooring can pose some risks...use caution when walking around inside.
Overall, this is an excellent place to photograph, to explore, or to just stop by and relax for a few. I've been here a few times, and I'm very impressed with the efforts of those who work to maintain the property, and by the respectful visitors who take only pictures and leave only footprints (and maybe a couple bucks).
I also tend to think of the song 'Uneasy Rider' by Charlie Daniels. 😉

We are from SC and passed by here on our way back home. Of course we had to turn around to see this beautiful place. I hope it can be restored one day and all the lost souls that are laid to rest here can be found once again. Seeing all those Graves caved in, stones busted and covered by overgrowth of trees just breaks my heart!

I frequent this place as a child. My fraternal grandparents and father are buried there. I remember attending Church there in the 1970's when visiting my Grandmother. I walk the property when I visit family in the area. You can feel the presence of the lord on these grounds.

Great preservation. It was a real surprise stumbling upon this when I had taken a wrong turn off of 20.
