Fascinating lava rock mesa on the San Carlos Apache Indian reservation. The land yields beautiful fields of wildflowers each spring during March. A four wheel drive is helpful but not necessary if you enter from the southern side off Highway 70.

Took my wife here to see the wildflowers and after a couple hours she was only looking forward to the amazing changes as the season went on for our return. While driving on the mesa make sure to drive around and see the amazing views around the edges.

Best wildflowers you will ever see. Better than Picacho Peak. I visited 3/23 and there were still a lot of buds. It will be amazing towards teh end of March. I suggest to go - because this year truly is a super bloom!

4/15/23. I think the bloom is over, unless another rainy spell starts it up again. It's a 2-hr drive from Tempe, so we were disappointed; should have gone earlier in the year but were busy doing other things at the weekends. Regarding the site, you should get a permit to enter from the San Carlos Apache Tribe recreation office on Geronimo Drive in Peridot, then drive 3 miles west. The entrance is not signed, but the office give you a map and directions; the entrance is near a section of guardrail between mileposts 268-269. We drove the main track from there all the way to the east end in a Honda Accord, so you can do it fairly easily in a non-4WD, just take your time, pay attention and stay out of the ruts. The permit office is open Mon-Sat, closed Sunday, but you should call to verify the hours. The Circle K does NOT sell permits, contrary to what you may have read on the web.

If you’re driving a car around, be careful on the Far East end. It gets a little rocky, but is navigable. It is an easy drive all the way around in a truck/crossover/suv.
