A very nice hike to the head of Madera Canyon. The trail is short but steep with some very steep sections after a mile. The creek runs alongside most of the trail and is beautiful when the water is running. A few small waterfalls along the way. You will first encounter a few large pieces of mining equipment a few hundred feet below the actual mine tunnel. The mine itself is full of water and not really accessible. With the running water from the creek this makes for a very nice snack or lunch stop. The trail appears to continue across the creek from the mine but there is nothing over there but an End of Trail sign. Be careful coming down as there is lots of loose rocks on the trail. At this writing the trail signage is not well marked. You continue along the creek past the rusty sign showing distances to the saddles above. Suggest using the provided trail maps at the trailheads.

Creek was a slight trickle. Lots of birds and little critters scurrying about. Watch out for poison oak.

A good, steep hike. It was very slick with the snow. If you are not a regular hiker, while this trail is short, it can be challenging. I would recommend a walking stick, bringing water and of course, good shoes! lots of amazing views on this trail.
